The question coming into Thursday was whether a gap down would be accepted or sold into. The morning answered “sold into”, and the afternoon only partly walked that back.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
- Every long-term measure we track still leans bearish, and the benchmark sits below the 12-day range it was trading in last week.
- Wednesday was a Neutral-Extreme day: a two-sided session that closed at its lows, so the downside lean carried into today.
- Friday’s primary scenario is a lower-value rotation; the line in the sand is 22508, the bottom of the first hour’s range.

MACRO CONTEXT
Daily, weekly and long-term averages all point the same way, and the composite market read is as bearish as it gets. The value area (the zone holding about 70% of the day’s trade) has stepped lower in three straight sessions. Price now sits in the lower quarter of an 820-day balance, testing a floor that dates back to April 2025. Wednesday’s close at the lows was with the trend, not against it, and today extended it.
Who Controlled the Day
We call today a Neutral Day (neither side owned both ends of the range), and since the close landed at 52% of the range, the label needs no bearish or bullish modifier. But the path was one-sided. The market opened 77 points below Wednesday’s close, below Wednesday’s whole range, and sat in a 100-point opening hour (the Initial Balance) between 22508 and 22611. Buyers’ attempt to fill the gap topped out right at that high, and the first two hours were rotation without conviction.
The break below the opening-hour low came around midday, not in the first two hours. A break that late suggests longer-term sellers stepped in after day traders had exhausted themselves, and it carried price 290 points lower to 22217. There, a buying tail (a stretch of prices buyers rejected fast, 22217-22296) formed, which is the responsive footprint of value buyers defending a lower price. The afternoon recovery stalled at 22448, well under the morning’s balance. Sellers were initiative; buyers were only responsive.
Value migrated lower again. Today’s value area spans 22350 to 22610, entirely below Wednesday’s 22680 to 22770, with no overlap. That is a clean downward shift, accepted by both time and volume, which reads as an orderly liquidation rather than a panic.
Volume Versus Time
The market spent most time near 22540, but the most volume traded near 22480, a 60-point gap. Trades done near 22480 and 22540 now sit above the close, and those prices may attract sellers on any bounce. The close, 22422, sits below both and just inside the lower half of value.
Volatility, in One Line
Today’s 393-point range was 1.6 times the five-day average and 1.8 times its average daily range, and trailing swings have run about double what options imply. Options themselves are fairly priced against recent realized movement, so the message is that the market is moving more intraday than options pricing assumes, not that options are cheap.
Anchored Averages
Today’s session average (22502) sits below Wednesday’s (22808), but the session from two days ago (22671) sits under Wednesday’s. The order is mixed, with today the lowest by a wide margin. The week-to-date average at 22697 is the key intermediate level overhead, and acceptance back above it would be the first real sign of repair. The longer rolling averages are all above price and stacked bearishly.
Balance and Structure for Tomorrow
Price is below the multi-week balance (the 12-day range) that ended last Friday, with a floor at 23021. If that floor counts as broken, the first extension target is 21877. Closer in, two reference levels matter most. Overhead, there is an unfilled gap from 22544 to 22595, sitting on top of today’s selling tail at 22551 to 22611: that is overlapping supply, and a rally into it is a test, not a breakout. Below, today’s buying tail at 22217 to 22296 is the first place buyers showed up.
What the Record Says
After Neutral days that broke the opening-hour low, the next session fell 58% of the time over 50 instances, with an average move of about 0.3% lower. That is a modest lean, not a strong edge, and it should not be traded as certainty.
Game Plan
Tomorrow is Friday. The primary expectation is another lower-value or rotational day. If the market opens inside value (22350 to 22610), sellers are most likely to fade the gap zone near 22544. An open between the day’s low and value is a sliver of responsive buying near the tail; an open below 22217 invites continuation toward the old 22022 reference. A gap above 22611 runs into the 22700 level and the 22772 selling tail, a trap risk for buyers.
LINE IN THE SAND: Above 22508 the market is trying to repair, and the bias neutralises. Below 22508 the bias stays down.
KEY LEVELS (high to low)
– 22772-22809: Wednesday’s selling tail, a rejection of higher prices
– 22700: Wednesday’s unvisited time-based point of control
– 22610: value area high and the day’s high, the opening-hour high
– 22544-22595: unfilled gap, overhead supply
– 22540: today’s time-based point of control
– 22508: opening-hour low, the line in the sand
– 22480: today’s volume point of control
– 22350: value area low
– 22217-22296: today’s buying tail
Session Learning Note
A late, one-sided break after a long, balanced morning was the more reliable cue for control than the gap itself: the gap told us who was early, the break told us who was committed.
